Fifteen tools, one claim between them, and almost no overlap in what they actually do. They do three different jobs, and the axis that separates them is reach rather than quality:
SEO Gets measures, reading your own Search Console data, but doesn’t create content;
Surfer grades a page you have already written,
Search Atlas scans and changes your live site, pushing fixes rather than handing you back a list.
NEURONwriter is the cheapest documented entry at $23 a month and the one flagged best value, while
Hike SEO is the dearest to start at $149.
Ahrefs AI sits near the top at $129 and is here for the quality of its data rather than for its AI.
Each entry below says who the tool is for and what job it owns, and the table underneath says what it actually supports, including: option of a free tier or a free trial, is it open source and also if the tool has an MCP server.
SurferBest overall
The on-page standard, and the tool every other one gets measured against. Pick it if you want one job done properly rather than a suite.

Research, brief and draft in a single pass. The best fit when the bottleneck is producing the page rather than grading it.

NEURONwriterBest value
Most of what Surfer does at a fraction of the price. The right first tool if you are paying out of your own pocket.

View tool$23 – $117 /mo
PlatformWebWebChromeChrome
A full SEO suite that added AI, rather than an AI tool that added SEO. The cheapest way to get rank tracking, backlinks and content scoring together.

Search AtlasMost automated
Its OTTO agent applies fixes to your live site rather than listing them, pushing changes through Cloudflare, your CMS or your code. The pitch is also the risk, so it wants someone reviewing what it changed.

Content operations rather than a single page. Worth it only when you publish enough that the workflow is the problem.

OutrankPremium
Full autopilot, an article a day published straight to your CMS. It never scores itself against the SERP, which is the appeal and the warning.

Software with a team behind it. The only other one here that implements changes, and the implementing is done by people.

Built for small businesses with no SEO team. Tells you what to do next in plain language instead of handing you a dashboard.

Your own Search Console data, read clearly. It makes nothing, which is why it costs a fraction of everything above it.

The best crawl and backlink data here, and it grades drafts rather than writing them. On the list for the data, not the AI.

Measuring is the cheapest thing on this list and the easiest to underrate.
SEO Gets,
GEO Metrics and
OmniSEO produce no content at all, they tell you where you stand, in search or in the assistants, and stop there. If you have never had a baseline reading this is the honest place to start, and it is where the cheapest entry points on the page are.
Grading and writing is the crowded middle.
Surfer,
Frase,
NEURONwriter and
Ahrefs AI all take a page or a brief and tell you how it compares to what is already ranking. They do mostly the same things. The real differences are price and what they connect to, and the table below shows both.
Tools that make changes to your site are the smallest group, and the one that needs the most thought.
Search Atlas pushes fixes to a live site,
Outrank publishes an article a day to your CMS, and
Ranked AI does the implementing with people rather than software. All three are buying you time, and all three want somebody reviewing what changed.

Signal coverage: how many of the four checks in the ranked list above (free tier, free trial, open source, MCP server) the tool documents.
Four of the fifteen compared products have a genuine free tier, meaning a plan you can keep using without paying:
SEO Gets,
Outrank,
Searchable and
Ahrefs AI.
Thirteen of the fifteen offer a free trial instead, which is a different promise, you get the full tool for a short window and then the card gets charged. Some are more generous than others.
None of the fifteen documents an open-source edition. If self-hosting matters to you, nothing on this page qualifies on the published evidence, and that is worth knowing before you read any further.
The practical route in is
SEO Gets: it reads the Search Console data you already have, makes nothing, and costs nothing to find out whether the picture it draws is useful to you.
Searchable is the other free tier worth a look, because it pulls Analytics in beside the AI-citation data, rather than showing one without the other.
Start with the measuring tools, not the writing ones.
A tool that writes gives you more of something you cannot yet judge, a tool that measures tells you whether anything you do is working.
SEO Gets is free and reads data you already own.
When you do buy,
NEURONwriter is the cheapest documented tool in this comparison at $23 a month, and it does most of what the category leader does.
Hike SEO is the one built specifically for a small business with no SEO person in-house, it tells you what to do next in plain language rather than handing you a dashboard to interpret, though at $149 a month it is the dearest starting price here.
Avoid the autopilot tools until you can tell good output from bad.
Outrank will publish an article a day to your CMS, which is only an advantage if you would otherwise publish nothing and you are willing to read what goes out first.
Nine of the fifteen expose an MCP server, which is what lets an assistant like Claude or ChatGPT call the tool directly instead of you copying data between tabs:
Surfer,
Frase,
NEURONwriter,
SE Ranking,
AirOps,
SEO Gets,
Ahrefs AI,
GEO Metrics and
Searchable.
That is a newer dividing line than price and it is moving quickly, so it is in the table above with the date it was last checked rather than written into the verdicts, which date more slowly.
Separately, three tools on this page act as agents in the older sense, they change something without you doing it.
Search Atlas applies fixes to a live site,
Outrank publishes to your CMS, and
Ranked AI puts a human team behind the same promise.
If you want one job done properly,
Surfer.
If you want most of that job done for a fraction of the price,
NEURONwriter.
If the bottleneck is producing pages rather than grading them,
Frase.
If you want rank tracking, backlinks and content scoring under one invoice,
SE Ranking.
If you want the work done rather than just checked, use
Search Atlas, and have someone review what it changed.
And if you are not sure yet, do not buy anything.
SEO Gets is free, reads data you already have, and will tell you more about whether you need any of the rest than another comparison page can.
Alternatively, if you are only looking for a free AI SEO tool, just use one of the tools listed with a free tier, or one which offers a free trial.
No single tool does measuring, writing and publishing all-in-one well.
Each one is stronger at one of the three, and the ones that claim to do all three need the most checking.
A tool that uses a language model to do part of the SEO job: scoring a page against what already ranks, drafting from a brief, reading your analytics back to you in plain language, or tracking whether assistants like ChatGPT cite your brand.
The fifteen on this page split into three groups: tools that measure, tools that grade or write, and tools that change your site for you.
AI SEO means using a language model to do classic SEO work faster, grading a page, drafting from a brief, fixing what a crawl found. The target is still Google.
GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization), are the newer job. Both are about getting your brand cited inside the assistants themselves. On this page Surfer, NEURONwriter, Frase and Ahrefs AI are the first kind, while GEO Metrics, Promptwatch, OmniSEO and Searchable are built for the second.
Several of the suites now claim both, which is why the table lists what each one supports rather than which label it uses.
There is no single answer, because they do different jobs. Surfer is the on-page standard and what the others get measured against.
NEURONwriter is the best value at $23 a month. Search Atlas is the most automated, because it applies fixes to a live site rather than listing them.
SEO Gets is the best free starting point.
Four of the fifteen exist mainly to answer that: GEO Metrics, Promptwatch, OmniSEO and Searchable all track how often assistants mention your brand and against which competitors.
OmniSEO covers the widest set of engines including Grok, Copilot and Meta AI, while Searchable is the only one that pulls your Search Console and Analytics data in alongside, so you can see whether a citation actually sent anybody.
Surfer, NEURONwriter, SE Ranking and AirOps include visibility tracking inside a broader tool rather than as the whole product.
Not on this page. Three of the fifteen will act without you (Search Atlas, Outrank and Ranked AI).
All three are better described as buying you time than replacing judgement. Each still wants someone reviewing what changed.
You can get started for nothing. Four tools have a free tier. Four publish no figure at all, and where that happens the table says “Price not listed” rather than guessing.
When it’s time to spend money, entry prices on this page run from $23 a month (NEURONwriter) to $149 (Hike SEO), and the widest published range reaches $999 a month (Search Atlas).
